Honor an Ancestor

A workshop for Elementary through University

Following classroom teacher’s introduction, questionnaires (See resources) are sent home to families with this further information:

To students: Be curious and ask more questions as you think of them to find out more about your ancestors. Details will make our Honoring Our Ancestors book even more interesting. Feel free to use more paper to write down what you find out.

To parents: The stories and art we create together will be shared with families online in a pdf class book. I urge all families to keep asking questions and collecting family stories. Research is showing the importance.

Classroom teachers guide students in using the information that they have gathered to write a one page story of why the student is honoring this ancestor. The facilitator comes to the classroom at this point and guides the students over three sessions in making a visual collage to accompany their writing. The facilitator scans the art, the classroom teacher provides the computer files of student stories and the facilitator puts all into a class book, a pdf is sent to all families.
